Most newcomers open two accounts — one fast English-first neobank for daily use, one branch bank for employer + landlord comfort. Here's how to pick both in 15 minutes.

Some small German shops + bakeries still don't take Mastercard. Keep a Girocard in your wallet if you open a Sparkasse or big-bank account.

The 5-step neobank onboarding

  1. Install the app

    2 min

N26, Revolut, Vivid — all work from your home country before you arrive.

  2. Scan passport + selfie

    3 min

AI-driven identity verification — supports 100+ passport types including Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi.

  3. Enter your German address

    2 min

A provisional Wunderflats or Airbnb address works at neobank level — update it once Anmeldung is done.

  4. Set PIN + activate IBAN

    Instant

IBAN is ready instantly for SEPA incoming (salary, reimbursements, friends).

  5. Wait for the physical card

    5–10 days

Ships in 5–10 business days. Digital card (Apple / Google Pay) works immediately.

KontoWechselService — move your existing IBAN

First-month mistakes

Do this first month

  • Open a neobank Girokonto before you arrive — IBAN ready day 1
  • Start Krankenkasse registration against a future IBAN — don't wait
  • Keep a Girocard + a Debit-Mastercard in your wallet
  • Set up a Freistellungsauftrag to exempt €1,000/yr of capital interest
  • Use DKB or Comdirect if you want free worldwide ATM withdrawals

Avoid this first month

  • Waiting for Girokonto to activate Krankenkasse (they accept future IBAN)
  • Using your home-country debit for 2 months — fees stack to €50–€150
  • Signing up for 'free' accounts requiring €700+ monthly deposit without reading the fine print
  • Opening 5+ accounts in one month — Schufa soft checks compound

Sending money home

See remittance comparison. Quick summary: Lemfi frequently wins on PKR, Wise still the INR default, TapTap Send competitive on BDT (often fee-free).

Tax consequences

Your Girokonto interest (if any) counts as Kapitalertragsteuer — 25% + Soli. Your bank withholds automatically if you don't file a Freistellungsauftrag (exempts the first €1,000/year of capital income). Set one up at every bank that pays you interest.

Schufa: the credit-score shadow

Every Girokonto application triggers a Schufa-Abfrage. Opening an account is classified as a "soft" request — no impact on your score. Applying for many credit products (credit cards, loans, BNPL) in a short window does hurt. Once or twice a year for banking is completely fine.
