What changed in 2026
Higher rent supplement
€380/month rent supplement for students living outside parental home — up from €360. Baseline rate €612 + rent supplement = €992 max for independent students.
Wider parental-income exemption
Parents can earn ~€30,000/year before their income starts reducing your BAföG (previously €26,800). This matters for middle-income families supporting a student abroad.
Faster approvals — 3-month statutory cap
3 monthsNew regulation mandates a first decision within 3 months of submission. Past average was 5–8 months. If you're still pending after 3 months, you can escalate in writing for an "Einstweilige Anordnung" (interim decision).
The loan-vs-grant mechanics
BAföG is 50% grant, 50% interest-free loan — but the loan portion is capped at €10,010 total repayment regardless of how much you borrowed. Repayment starts 5 years after Förderungsende, in monthly instalments from €130. Low earners (below €1,650 net/mo) defer automatically.

Tactical tips
Do this
- Apply before October 1 if starting winter semester — late applications lose one month's payment

- Request certified translations of parent income docs before applying, not after
