The 5-step playbook
Confirm the strike is real
5 minCheck bahn.de/service/aktuelle-meldungen/streik (DB publishes within 2 hrs of announcement), DB Navigator app, S-Bahn Twitter for your city (often faster than DB).
Check if your route is affected
10 minLong-distance (ICE/IC/EC) usually fully cancelled. DB Regio (RE/RB) cancelled or heavily reduced. S-Bahn sometimes. U-Bahn / tram / bus almost never — different unions.
Apply the free rebooking rule
D-Ticket still valid on the next available train on the same route. Mobilitätsgarantie for reserved long-distance tickets: 60-min late = 25% refund, 120-min = 50%, cancellation = full. File at bahn.de/service/fahrgastrechte.
Book alternatives immediately

What NOT to do
Safe moves
- Ask HR for Homeoffice first thing in the morning
- Monitor @DB_Bahn + S-Bahn city account for route-level updates
- Rebook on FlixTrain at the strike announcement, not after it starts
- Keep Fahrkarte screenshots for Mobilitätsgarantie claims
Avoid
- Don't buy non-refundable long-distance tickets during strike uncertainty
- Don't assume employer treats strike days as regular absence — ask HR
- Don't rely on taxi apps in strike-hit hubs — 40+ min waits, surge pricing
- Don't try to drive into Berlin/Munich during rush on strike day — traffic doubles
