What definitely won't work
Legitimate reasons
- Hospital admission with discharge letter
- Family death with Sterbeurkunde
- Visa-delay letter from embassy
- Testing centre closure
Will NOT work (€195 gone)
- "My alarm didn't go off"
- "I had a small cold"
- "My train was 30 min late" (unless >2 hrs with documentation)
- "I thought the exam was next week"
The practical strategy
Book at least 8 weeks out
8 wks bufferGives you safety margin if you need to reschedule for legitimate reasons.
Travel to centre night before if >1 hr away
Book a hostel / Airbnb nearby. Morning commute surprises have ended too many exam days.
Bring backup + ID
Pre-departureDigital exam: bring a backup device; TestDaF doesn't supply one. Print confirmation + 2 forms of photo ID.
Eat breakfast
Exam morning3-hour exam on an empty stomach is a trap. Also bring water (some centres allow).
Practice on the digital demo
Typing German special characters (ß, ä, ö, ü) on a QWERTY keyboard is slower than you think. testdaf.de/teilnehmende/testdaf-digital hosts a free demo.
If you fail — consider DSH
The 2026 digital shift
TestDaF digital is now the default. Paper is available at 40% fewer centres. Book digital unless your target university explicitly requires paper.
