Finanzamt + Steuer-ID in Frankfurt

Your 11-digit Steuer-ID, the 5 Frankfurt Finanzämter, and your first tax return.

The Steuer-ID (IdNr)

Your 11-digit tax ID arrives by post 2–4 weeks after Anmeldung, mailed from the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern (federal, not Frankfurt). Every employer, Finanzamt filing, and Krankenkasse asks for it.

Lost it?

Use the BZSt online form at bzst.de. Copy arrives by post in ~6 weeks. You can also ask your employer to look it up on your Lohnabrechnung (payslip).

The 5 Frankfurt Finanzämter

Frankfurt splits local tax administration across 5 offices:

OfficeServes
Finanzamt Frankfurt Icentral
Finanzamt Frankfurt IInorth / Nordend
Finanzamt Frankfurt IIIeast / Bornheim
Finanzamt Frankfurt IVSachsenhausen + south
Finanzamt Frankfurt V-HöchstHöchst + west

Which office you belong to depends on your Anmeldeadresse. The letter announcing your Steuer-ID often includes your assigned Finanzamt; otherwise check finanzamt.hessen.de.

Your first tax return

  • Salaried workers: filing is optional if only Steuerklasse I + one employer.
  • Blue Card / higher earners: still worth filing — you'll usually get money back thanks to Werbungskosten + Umzugskosten deductions.
  • Newcomer windfall: the Umzugskosten Pauschale (~€964 + €643 per dependant) + moving costs to Germany are deductible in year 1.
