WG culture + scams in Hamburg

How Hamburg WGs work — pricing, applications, and how to avoid the deposit-first scam.

A room in a Hamburg WG runs €550–800 warm in central districts, €400–550 in Harburg or Billstedt. Competition is real but less brutal than Munich or Berlin.

Where to look

  1. WG-Gesucht.de — dominant platform.
  2. Facebook groups — "WG Hamburg", "Zimmer frei Hamburg".
  3. University noticeboards — UHH, HAW Hamburg, TUHH.
  4. Mundpropaganda — ask at St. Pauli bars, Altona cafés.

The application

  • 3–5 sentence Selbstvorstellung.
  • Show up on time, be friendly.
  • Bring: passport, Anmeldung (or plan), proof of income.

Scams

Deposit-first: "I'm in Munich, send €1,500, keys by post." Never wire before a physical or verified live video walk-through.

Too cheap = scam. €350 St. Pauli WG doesn't exist.

Paperwork

  • Kaution typically 2× cold rent; capped at 3 by law.
  • Untermietvertrag must be signed.
  • Kautionssparbuch — insist on proof that your deposit is in a separate account.

Kiez vibe

  • St. Pauli + Altona — young, creative, hipster-dense.
  • Eimsbüttel — professionals, bars, quieter.
  • Winterhude + Barmbek — family, leafy, calmer.
  • Harburg — cheapest, south of Elbe, commute 20 min.

Test yourself

General housing information. Rental markets, legal requirements, and scam patterns evolve. Always verify current listings on the platform where they appear (ImmobilienScout24, Immowelt, WG-Gesucht, eBay-Kleinanzeigen) and confirm landlord identity through official channels. For tenancy disputes consult Mieterschutzbund, Mieterverein, or a licensed Rechtsanwalt.
