Kindergeld 2026 — 259 € per child, who qualifies on a non-EU permit, and how to apply
Kindergeld pays 259 €/child/month in 2026, until 18 — or 25 in education. Eligibility for Blue Card and skilled-worker holders, the Familienkasse application, and the Kinderzuschlag top-up worth up to 297 € more.
259 € per child, per month — for up to 25 years
Kindergeld is the quiet giant of German family money: over the life of one child it commonly adds up to €50,000+. It's not welfare — it's a tax-system child benefit that Blue Card and skilled-worker families fully qualify for.
per child per month from 1 Jan 2026 (up from 255 €)

The child must live in your household in Germany (EU/EEA special rules aside). Kindergeld is not a needs-based benefit — claiming it does not endanger permanent-residence or citizenship applications.
How to apply
Get the child's Steuer-ID
automatic after Anmeldung/birthNewborns: the tax ID arrives by post weeks after the birth registration. Children arriving on a visa: it follows the Anmeldung.
Apply online at the Familienkasse
~20 minutesThe Familienkasse (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) takes the application online — you'll need your tax ID, the child's, and your IBAN.
Payment starts, backdated up to 6 months
first payment in weeksDon't panic about a slow decision — but don't wait longer than 6 months to apply, because backdating stops there.
The stack on top: Kinderzuschlag
Working parents with lower incomes can add Kinderzuschlag (KiZ): up to 297 €/child/month — Kindergeld + KiZ = up to 556 €/child/month. Minimum gross income to qualify: 900 € (couples) / 600 € (single parents); it tapers away as income rises. KiZ recipients also get the Bildung-und-Teilhabe package (school supplies, lunches, trips) and Kita fees waived.
KiZ is income-tested — but it is a work-based family benefit, generally considered safe for residence purposes, unlike Bürgergeld. Check the benefits optimizer, which flags residence-risk per benefit.
Kindergeld vs Kinderfreibetrag
The Finanzamt automatically runs a Günstigerprüfung in your tax return: whichever of Kindergeld or the child tax allowance (Kinderfreibetrag) is better for you wins. You don't choose — you just must have applied for Kindergeld. High earners effectively get the allowance; everyone else keeps the cash.
