Dreistreifige Bake — Three-stripe countdown marker (240 m)
Roughly 240 m before a level crossing. Careful with the number: StVO Anlage 1 lists the combined board — Zeichen 156, Bahnübergang mit dreistreifiger Bake, which carries the locomotive symbol above the stripes. The plain three-striper without the symbol is Zeichen 157 (157-10 mounted on the right, 157-20 on the left) from the Verkehrszeichenkatalog. A markedly different distance may be printed in black figures above the stripes. Verified 2026-08-03.

What you are looking at
Tall white rectangle with three thick red diagonal stripes; the stripes always slope DOWN towards the carriageway, so a board on your right slopes up from left to right.
Remember it like this
RED stripes = railway, at 240/160/80 m. BLUE stripes = motorway exit, at 300/200/100 m. That swap is a favourite exam trick.
