Do I have to retake the driving test in Germany?
Yes. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are all absent from Anlage 11 FeV, so there is no test-free exchange — you sit the full German theory and practical exam. §29 FeV lets you drive on your home licence for 6 months from your Anmeldung, extendable once to 12. Verified 2026-08-03.
The honest version, before you spend a euro
- There is no shortcut. Anlage 11 FeV is a country list. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are not on it, so the “partial exchange” and “Bavaria is stricter than Berlin” stories you will read in group chats are wrong. The requirement is federal and identical in every state.
- What you do get: the statutory minimum Fahrschule lesson quota is waived. You still register with a Fahrschule to be entered for the exams, but you buy only the lessons you actually need.
- The clock is short. 6 months from Anmeldung, one extension to 12 (§29 FeV). Exam slots and Führerscheinstelle appointments routinely eat months, so the theory is the part to start today — it is free to prepare and it is the gate to everything else.
- The exam can be sat in English at most TÜV and DEKRA centres. The signs and the legal terms stay German either way, which is how this trainer teaches them.

How the exam is scored
30 questions, 45 minutes. Every question carries 2, 3, 4 or 5 Fehlerpunkte (error points) depending on how safety-critical it is. You fail above 10 points — exactly 10 is still a pass. And a second rule fails you independently: two wrong 5-point questions, even at a total of 10. Our mock enforces both, because a trainer that only counts to 10 will tell you that you passed a paper you failed.

Common questions
Can I exchange my Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi driving licence in Germany?
No — not without exams. None of the three countries appears in Anlage 11 FeV, the list that decides which foreign licences can be swapped test-free. All three are treated as unlisted third countries: you must pass both the German theory exam and the practical driving test. The one real relief is that the statutory minimum number of Fahrschule lessons is waived.
How long can I drive on my foreign licence in Germany?
Six months from the day you take up ordinary residence (§29 FeV) — in practice from your Anmeldung, not your date of entry. It can be extended once, by up to six more months, if you show the Führerscheinstelle that your stay will not exceed 12 months. Carry an International Driving Permit or a certified German translation with the original licence.
How does the German theory test actually score?
By error points (Fehlerpunkte), not by correct answers. There are 30 questions, each weighted 2 to 5 points by how safety-critical it is. You fail above 10 points — exactly 10 is still a pass. There is a second, independent fail rule almost every practice app misses: two wrong 5-point questions fail you even when the total is only 10.
Can I take the German theory test in English?
Yes. TÜV and DEKRA offer the Klasse B theory exam in several languages including English at most test centres. The signs and legal terms stay German, which is why this trainer teaches the German term with its English gloss rather than translating it away.
