Anerkennung — getting your foreign degree recognized in Germany (2026)
The honest map of German credential recognition for India, Pakistan and Bangladesh: which professions are regulated, the four routes (Approbation, chamber, ZAB, none), what the promised 8 weeks really means, and the apostille trap that wastes money before you even apply.
8 weeks promised. 12–24 months real.
Germany advertises a recognition decision within 8 weeks. For files from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh the full journey is usually measured in months to years — and for many professions you need no recognition at all. Here is the honest map.
What recognition costs an IT professional — because none is needed
0 €
Software, data, most office and business roles are NOT regulated professions in Germany. You can sign a contract tomorrow. Recognition is only mandatory where the law protects the job itself — medicine, nursing, teaching, law — or where your visa demands an equivalence notice.
The three sentences that save most people months
Not regulated
IT & software — no recognition procedure exists or is needed
Heaviest path
Doctors, nurses, pharmacists — licence before you may work
Title only
Engineers — the job is free, only "Ingenieur" is protected
- If your job is unregulated (IT, marketing, finance, research, most of the private sector), nobody can ask you for "Anerkennung" to work. An optional ZAB Statement of Comparability (208 €) only helps with visa files and employer trust.anerkennung-in-deutschland.de
- If your job is regulated (medicine, nursing, teaching, law, some trades for the visa), recognition comes first — before the job, sometimes before the visa. From 1 November 2026 the Kenntnisprüfung becomes the default route for third-country doctors, dentists and pharmacists.bundesgesundheitsministerium.de
- Engineers sit in between: you may do engineering work without any procedure — only carrying the protected German title "Ingenieur/Ingenieurin" needs permission from the Land's chamber, and for the visa an anabin H+ printout or ZAB statement usually suffices.
The four routes at a glance
| Provider | Who it applies to | What it is | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
Approbation / staatliche Anerkennung The heavy path. Kenntnisprüfung or Anpassungslehrgang is the norm for IN/PK/BD files. | Doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists | Full state licence from the Land health authority — mandatory before working | 770–4,500 € + translations |
Chamber procedure (IHK FOSA / HWK) The job is often unregulated — but the §18a visa needs this notice anyway. | Vocational trades — electricians, mechatronics, chefs, hotel, office clerks | Equivalence notice for the dual-training system | 100–600 € typical |
ZAB Zeugnisbewertung Best Optional but powerful for Blue Card and Chancenkarte files when anabin is unclear. | Unregulated academic professions — IT, engineers, business | Comparability statement, NOT a licence | 208 € flat |
No procedure at all | Most unregulated jobs with a clean anabin H+ degree | Nothing to file — start working | 0 € |

Every profession has one exact mechanism, and mixing them up costs months. The wizard names yours — including the specific law (BÄO, PflBG, BQFG) and the office in your Bundesland.
The 8-week promise, decoded
You submit your file
day 0The §81a AufenthG fast-track (fee 411 €) says the recognition authority 'soll' — should — decide within 8 weeks. Read the fine print: within 8 weeks of COMPLETE documents.
The completeness loop
2–6 monthsFor third-country files this is where the time goes: missing syllabus hours, un-translated internship records, a good-standing certificate that expired while the file waited. Each loop adds weeks to months. Document-completeness loops routinely add 3–12 months.
The actual decision clock
3–4 monthsOnly now does the statutory deadline start: 3 months for standard BQFG procedures, 4 months for medical professions. This part is genuinely fast — it was never the bottleneck.
Partial recognition → the real work
3–12 monthsFor medical professions, 'wesentliche Unterschiede' is the standard outcome: a Kenntnisprüfung (with its own waiting list — Berlin and NRW slots are the known bottleneck) or an Anpassungslehrgang of 8–11 months.
Plan with the realistic range, not the promise. For Approbation professions, 12–24 months total is normal for files from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The wizard shows the promised-vs-reality gap for each profession as a bar — share the link with whoever is waiting for you.
The apostille trap (India · Pakistan · Bangladesh)
Do not buy an apostille. Germany formally objected to the Apostille-Convention accessions of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh — German authorities reject apostilles from all three countries, and German-embassy legalisation is suspended for all three too.hcch.net The working path is authority-initiated verification: the German authority (or embassy) commissions a document check in your home country. You pay the verification fee and wait — budget months for this step. The wizard shows the exact per-country steps and fees.
What's changing
Getting easier
- Nov-2026 reform (in force 2026-11-01): Kenntnisprüfung becomes the default for third-country doctors, dentists and pharmacists — the document fight becomes optional
- Anerkennungspartnerschaft (§16d Abs. 3): enter Germany and work while completing recognition, up to 3 years
- Midwife procedures are being de-bureaucratised and digitalised
Still hard
- The Work-and-Stay-Agentur is cabinet-approved Eckpunkte only — it will NOT shorten your file in 2026; plan with today's per-Land authorities
- Veterinarians are explicitly excluded from the Nov-2026 reform
- 16 Länder still means 16 sets of authorities, fees and KP waiting lists
Go deeper
- IT professionals: why you need no recognition — and the two documents you might still want.
- Doctors & nurses: the Approbation path — the heaviest route, honestly costed.
- The ZAB Zeugnisbewertung — the 208 € document that unblocks Blue Card files.
- The Anerkennung wizard — your profession, your Land, your route.
