Germany promises a recognition decision in 8 weeks — reality for files from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh is usually measured in months to years, and it depends entirely on your profession. Many jobs (IT, most office roles) need no recognition at all. Pick your profession, your Bundesland and where your qualification is from — and get the exact mechanism, the competent authority, the document checklist and the honest numbers.
You don't need any recognition — IT and software development are unregulated professions in Germany, confirmed on the official federal recognition portal. A ZAB Statement of Comparability (208 €) is optional but useful for Blue Card files when your university isn't cleanly listed in anabin, and for employer trust. There's even a no-degree route: sufficient professional IT experience plus a salary threshold can replace the degree entirely.
Check your profession →No — you can work as an engineer without any recognition procedure. Only the German title "Ingenieur/in" is protected and needs permission from a Land authority. For the visa, an anabin H+ printout of your institution and degree is usually enough; otherwise get the ZAB Zeugnisbewertung for 208 €.
See the engineer path →It's an official statement mapping your foreign degree to a German level — not a recognition, but widely accepted for Blue Card and skilled-worker visa files, Chancenkarte points, and employer trust. It costs 208 € (a replacement copy is 104 €), and processing typically takes around 3 months, though this varies.
When you need ZAB →Realistically 12–24 months, despite the "8-week" fast-track promise. MBBS degrees from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh almost always get "substantial differences", leading to the Kenntnisprüfung — and from 1 November 2026 the Kenntnisprüfung becomes the default route for third-country doctors, dentists, and pharmacists anyway. You'll need B2 German plus the C1 Fachsprachprüfung; the most-used bridge is the Berufserlaubnis (§10 BÄO, max 2 years) which lets you earn as an Assistenzarzt while preparing. Budget roughly 1,500–4,500 € all-in.
Doctor recognition roadmap →A deficit notice (Defizitbescheid) is the norm for Indian B.Sc/GNM, Pakistani BSN, and Bangladeshi diploma nursing — then you choose the Kenntnisprüfung (exam fee about 670–1,500 € depending on the Land) or an Anpassungslehrgang of roughly 8–11 months, which is usually free to you because employers or the Arbeitsagentur fund it. Full recognition typically takes 12–24 months, but you can often work as a Pflegehelfer:in in the meantime. Warning: recruiters charging you placement fees are a red flag — reputable pipelines don't bill the nurse.
Nurse recognition roadmap →No — this is wasted money for Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi documents. Germany formally objected to all three countries' accessions to the Apostille Convention, so German authorities reject their apostilles, and embassy legalisation is suspended too. The real path is authority-initiated document verification: roughly 150–250 € via trusted lawyers for India (varies), PKR 75,000 for Pakistan, BDT 28,000 for Bangladesh.
It's an employer-initiated accelerated procedure at the Ausländerbehörde (fee 411 €) where the recognition authority should decide within 2 months — but that clock only starts once your documents are complete. Document-completeness loops routinely add months for third-country files, so treat the 8 weeks as the authority's decision window, not your total timeline.
Promised vs. real timelines →Not as a Steuerberater or Wirtschaftsprüfer — there's no direct recognition bridge for those protected titles. You can be admitted to the Steuerberaterprüfung with a comparable degree plus 2–3 years of relevant German practice (the exam is in German with a pass rate around 50 %). The practical route many take: Big-4 and industry firms hire CA/ACCA holders for IFRS and accounting roles without any recognition, since employee accounting roles are unregulated.
Not if you need the §18a skilled-worker visa: for vocational qualifications (electrician, mechatronics, chef, hotel trades…) the visa requires an equivalence notice even though the job itself doesn't. For industrial trades that's IHK FOSA in Nürnberg (100–600 €, average around 550 €, decision within 3 months of complete documents); craft trades go through your local Handwerkskammer.
Does your visa need it? →There's no recognition route — third-country law degrees can't be recognized because the legal systems differ, and the aptitude-test route is EU-only. Realistic options: register under §10 RDG to advise on your home country's law (a viable diaspora niche), work in-house in compliance or contract roles (unregulated employment), or do the full German legal education (5–8 years) if you want courtroom admission.
