Anmeldung in Munich: the 2026 guide

How to register your address at the KVR — what to bring, when to book, and where to go if slots are gone.

By law, you must register your address at the KVR within 14 days of moving into a Munich apartment. Miss it and you risk a fine (rarely enforced, usually a warning) — but more importantly, you can't get a Steuer-ID, open a Girokonto, or extend your visa without it.

Where

Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR)

  • Address: Ruppertstraße 19, 80337 München
  • Transit: U3/U6 Poccistraße
  • Phone: +49 89 233-96000
  • Hours: Mon 07:30–13:00, Tue 08:30–13:00, 14:00–18:00, Wed 07:30–13:00, Thu 08:30–13:00, 14:00–18:00, Fri 07:30–13:00.

Book the Termin

The KVR runs online bookings at stadt.muenchen.de/buergerservice.

Typical wait: 48 weeks for an Anmeldung slot, 816 weeks for the Ausländerbehörde (residence permits, extensions). The KVR Termin strategy guide covers the 30-minute-before-open trick for new slots.

What to bring

  1. Passport (and visa if you have one).
  2. Wohnungsgeberbestätigung — your landlord's signed confirmation that you're living at the address. Ask them for this before you arrive; some delay, most oblige quickly.
  3. Rental contract (optional but helpful).
  4. Filled Anmeldeformular (download from the KVR portal or fill on the spot).

The appointment itself

It takes ~15 minutes. The clerk types your details, stamps your Anmeldebescheinigung, and you're done. Scan and save that certificate — you'll reference it for every future filing (visa, bank, Krankenkasse, Finanzamt).

If you missed the 14-day window

Take the appointment anyway. The clerk almost never fines late registration for newcomers. If they do, the standard admonition is "nächstes Mal rechtzeitig" — "next time on time."

After Anmeldung

  • Steuer-ID arrives by post 2–4 weeks later (from the federal tax office, not Munich). See the Finanzamt guide.
  • Krankenkasse card arrives from your insurer once they link the Anmeldung to your file.
  • Deutschlandticket — you can now subscribe at the new 2026 rate of €63/month.
