Getting a KVR Termin: the 30-minute-before trick
Bürgerbüro releases slots ~30 minutes before opening. Ausländerbehörde releases them randomly. Here's how to catch both.
The KVR online booking system at stadt.muenchen.de is notoriously painful. Slots vanish within seconds of appearing. But patterns exist — use them.
Two systems, two patterns
Bürgerbüro / Bürgeramt (Anmeldung, Abmeldung, driver's license)
- Pattern: ~30 minutes before daily opening.
- Best window: Monday, 07:00–07:30. The system refreshes and dumps the week's fresh slots, absorbing cancellations from the previous weekend.
- Secondary windows: Tuesday/Thursday 08:00–08:30 (the Tue/Thu late opening means slots for those afternoons drop in the morning).
Ausländerbehörde (residence permits, extensions)
- Pattern: random, throughout the day.
- Check every 1–2 minutes at peak. The "drop" is driven by other applicants cancelling, not a scheduled release.
- Emergency Termin path: email auslaenderbehoerde.kvr@muenchen.de with a concrete reason (visa expiring soon, job start date, flight already booked). Sometimes a slot appears within 1–2 weeks.
Practical tactics
- Keep the tab open on two devices; refresh manually during your window. Auto-refresh tools tend to get throttled.
- Have your booking details pre-typed in a text file — name, DOB, passport number, email, phone. When a slot appears you have ~10 seconds to lock it.
- Accept any location. The KVR has multiple buildings — don't filter by location if you just need the Anmeldung done.
- Consider adjacent districts. Outlying Bürgerbüros (Pasing, Berg am Laim) sometimes have slots when the main Ruppertstraße office is empty.
Don't use third-party "book my Termin" services that charge for slots. Berlin's LEA had to shut down its entire online system in early 2025 because of exactly this kind of abuse. We link users to the official portal and never book on their behalf — and you shouldn't pay anyone else to book either.
What to try if slots are truly gone
- Walk-in early: some KVR offices accept limited walk-ins Tue/Thu at 08:00 for urgent cases. Bring all documents and arrive 30 minutes before opening.
- Email the Ausländerbehörde with the word "dringend" (urgent), your visa expiry date, and a summary of circumstances.
- Request a Fiktionsbescheinigung if your residence permit expires before you can book — this keeps you legal while waiting.
- Free migration counselling (BAMF Migrationsberatung, Caritas, AWO) — they know the operational shortcuts.
Our Termin notifier
We automate the Bürgerbüro watch at germandost.com/tools/termin. Subscribe and we email you when a Munich slot opens. We do NOT book on your behalf — you still open the portal and finish the booking.
