Munich's MVV network is one of Germany's best: U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, and bus all talk to the same ticket system. For most newcomers, the answer is "get the Deutschlandticket."
Deutschlandticket (D-Ticket)
- Price: €63/month as of January 2026 (raised from €58 in 2025).
- Covers all regional trains (RB, RE, IRE), S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, bus, and most regional buses across all of Germany — not just Munich.
- Does not cover long-distance: ICE, IC, EC, Flixtrain. For those buy a separate DB ticket.
- Monthly subscription; cancel any time before the 10th of the month.
If you spend > €63/month on transit (2+ long commutes per week), the D-Ticket is a no-brainer. If you take the U-Bahn fewer than 10 times a month, stick to single tickets — it's cheaper.
Single + day tickets (if you skip D-Ticket)
- Kurzstrecke (short stretch): €1.9 — up to 4 bus/tram stops OR 2 U-Bahn/S-Bahn stops.
- Einzelfahrt Zone M: €4 — valid for one direction, 3 hours, transfers allowed.
- Day ticket Zone M: €9.7 — unlimited travel in zone M. From 2026, children 6–14 are free on MVV day tickets.
Apps worth installing
- MVV-App — the official MVV app with route planning + ticket purchase. Official MVV app with route planner + tickets.
- MVG Fahrinfo München — real-time MVG app. Real-time U/S-Bahn + tram.
- DB Navigator — Long-distance + S-Bahn + commuter. Essential for ICE/IC tickets.
- Google Maps still works as a fallback for simple routing.
Nightbus + NightTram
U- and S-Bahn run ~1am to 4am only on Friday/Saturday nights. Other nights the NightBus (N) and NightTram take over — look for lines prefixed with "N" on the MVV map.
Common first-week mistakes
- Forgetting to validate a single ticket: unlike the D-Ticket, paper-printed single tickets need to be validated (stamped) at the platform entrance.
- Zone confusion: Munich's zone system simplified in 2019; most rides in the city are Zone M. The airport is in zone 4 — factor in the higher single-ticket price.
- Relying on Google Maps for tram stops: the MVV app is more accurate for trams and S-Bahn delays.
