Sending money home: cheapest way from Germany to Pakistan/India/Bangladesh

Wise vs Lemfi vs ACE vs Western Union on a €500 send to PKR/INR/BDT. The hidden FX markup costs more than the visible fee — for Pakistani/Indian newcomers migrating to Germany.

Finance · 2026

The fee you see isn't the price you pay

On a €500 send to Pakistan, the gap between Lemfi and Western Union is roughly 6,500 PKR — and most of it hides inside the exchange rate, not the fee line. Drag the slider below to see your real receive amount, corridor by corridor.

The first money order you send to Ammi or to your family back home should not quietly lose Rs 6,000 to a familiar yellow logo. Every remittance has two cost lines — the fee you can see, and the FX markup you usually can't. This guide compares the providers that serve Germany, with live numbers from our REMITTANCE_PROVIDERS dataset, so you keep more of every euro you earned.

lost on a single €500 send if you pick Western Union over Lemfi

~6,500 PKR

Mostly hidden in the FX rate

Over a year of monthly sends that is ~78,000 PKR — a month of a parent's living costs in Lahore. The money is in the rail you choose, not in sending more.

Try it: drag, switch corridor, swap provider

The animation below is the whole guide in one interactive picture. Each euro you send is launched on an arc from Germany to home; at the apex it passes through an "FX gate" that splits it into a shower of rupees/taka. A low-markup provider (Lemfi, Wise) drops a dense shower that lands at your family's node; a high-markup provider (Western Union) loses visible particles to the red "fee + markup" slice. Drag the send-amount slider (€100–€1,500), tap PKR / INR / BDT to switch corridor, and tap the provider chips to re-aim the arc and watch the receive counter roll.

Each euro is launched on a ballistic arc, split at the FX gate into a PKR shower. Lower markup = denser shower landing home; higher markup loses particles to the red fee slice. Lemfi is the best-value pick for this corridor right now.

Source: REMITTANCE_PROVIDERS (verified 2026-04-22); mid-market ≈ €1 = 330 PKR (Q2 2026 fallback). Indicative only — providers set final rates at send time. Info + affiliate referrals only (§32 KWG posture).

The €5 fee on Western Union is the small part. The 2.3% markup on €500 is the big part — together they cost you roughly 6,500 PKR more than Lemfi for the exact same delivery. That is the whole point of comparing receive amount, not fee.

How to send your first transfer — step by step

  1. Get a German IBAN first

    Day 1

You fund every cheap remittance app from a SEPA bank transfer or German debit card. A neobank IBAN (N26, Revolut) is ready in ~15 minutes. See the banking guide.

  2. Install the official app — not a lookalink

    10 min

Lemfi, ACE, TapTap Send and Sendwave are app-first. Download only from the App Store / Google Play. Verify your identity with your passport (Pakistani/Indian/Bangladeshi passports are all supported).

  3. Add your recipient

    5 min

Bank account, UPI ID (India), RAAST/wallet (Pakistan), or bKash/Nagad (Bangladesh). Double-check the IBAN/account number — providers cannot reverse a transfer to the wrong account.

  4. Compare the receive amount before you confirm

    3 min

Open the tool above, set today's amount and corridor, and pick the provider showing the highest receive amount. Pull up the app's live quote and confirm it matches.

  5. Pay by SEPA, not card

    ≤ 10 sec from 2026

Fund the transfer with a SEPA bank debit, not a credit card (cards add a cash-advance fee). With SEPA Instant now mandatory across the EU, your euros reach the provider in seconds.

App-first challengers vs the old names

App-first (Lemfi, TapTap, ACE, Sendwave)

  • Cheapest receive amounts on EUR→PKR and EUR→BDT in 2026
  • Instant rails built in — UPI, RAAST, bKash, Nagad
  • Zero flat fees on most corridors
  • Biometric login reduces account-takeover risk

Web-first incumbents (Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit, Western Union)

  • Wise still edges EUR→INR on pure rate and gives the cleanest receipt
  • Recurring + bulk sends are smoother on web
  • Western Union's cash-pickup network is unmatched for un-banked recipients
  • First-transfer promos (€20–30) often favour the bigger brands once

Pitfalls that quietly drain your sends

Never send remittances through your German bank's own international wire. Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank charge €10–25 plus a ~1.5% FX markup — many times the cost of any app here. Never share a TAN or 2FA code: real providers never ask for it by phone or email, and "your account will be blocked" calls are always a scam. See common scams targeting newcomers.

  • Comparing fee instead of receive amount. A €0 fee with a fat markup loses to a small fee with a tight markup. The widget above already does this math.
  • Using your home-country card to "pay yourself back." Foreign-card fees stack to €50–€150 over a couple of months. Open a German account first.
  • Sending cash via Western Union when the recipient has a bank account. You are paying for a convenience you don't need.
  • Locking into one app. Lemfi may win Monday, ACE Tuesday. Re-check the live quote each time.

For comparison, a student visa requires you to park 11.904 in a blocked account that releases only 992/month — money you cannot freely send home. Plan remittances around what your visa and budget actually free up. For the tax side of your finances, see the German tax guide.
