The Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) updates the Mangelberuf list annually. Check the current list at make-it-in-germany.com.
What doesn't change in 2026
Still unlocked
- Work-experience route — 3 years in IT in the last 5 substitutes for a formal degree
- Accelerated Niederlassungserlaubnis (27 months with B1, 33 without)
- Family reunification with no German-language proof for the spouse
- Spouse's work authorisation is unrestricted
Still blocked
- Freelance + self-employed — Blue Card is employee-only (use §19c / §21)
- Sign-on + performance bonuses don't count unless contractually guaranteed
- Non-'H+' Anabin degrees require ZAB recognition first
- Hitting the threshold doesn't guarantee visa — consular queues still apply
Common pitfalls
Counting the wrong income
The threshold is gross annual salary. Sign-on bonuses, performance bonuses, stock options do not count unless contractually guaranteed.
Offer just under the threshold
€48,000 — no Blue Card. €50,700.01 — Blue Card. Push the employer for €52,000 to buffer currency moves + exchange-rate rounds.
Freelance + self-employed
Blue Card is employee-only. For freelancers, §19c or §21 AufenthG are the routes.
Non-EU degrees not recognised
Check anabin.kmk.org. If your degree isn't 'H+', you need a ZAB Zeugnisbewertung first (~€100, ~8 weeks).
