Wehrdienst 2026 — who it applies to
Germany's Military Service Modernisation Act came into force on January 1, 2026. It does NOT reinstate conscription. It does bring back mandatory registration and medical exams for the 2008+ cohort. Here is the plain-English version for expats.

What actually changes in 2026
January 1, 2026 — Law in force
The Wehrdienst-Modernisierungsgesetz becomes binding. No one is drafted on this date.
Throughout 2026 — Bundeswehr prepares registry
The Bundeswehr builds the digital registry and Musterung capacity (medical centres, staff, forms).
January 2027 — First Musterung round
German males born 2008 receive a letter to complete a questionnaire and attend a medical examination. Result: they go on the reserve list — not into active service.
Ongoing — Voluntary service expands
Paid voluntary service (Grundwehrdienst) continues in parallel. Salary: roughly €1,500–€2,300 gross per month depending on rank, with housing and meals provided.
Trigger scenario — Bedarfswehrpflicht
If Bundeswehr targets fall short and the Bundestag passes a resolution, a needs-based draft could activate. This requires a separate parliamentary vote and is not automatic.

Travel rule: the one operational detail for younger German males
If you are a German male citizen aged 17–45 on the Bundeswehr register, trips abroad longer than three months require prior approval. This is not new — the same rule existed before conscription was suspended in 2011. It does not affect tourism, short business trips, Erasmus semesters under three months, or any travel by non-citizens.

FAQs for expats
I am a Blue Card holder. Does this affect my visa? No. The 2026 law applies to German citizens only. Your Blue Card, residence permit, and family reunion rights are unchanged.
I naturalised last year. I am a man born in 1990. Am I drafted? No. The law applies to men born 2008 or later. Older cohorts are not retroactively pulled in.
I am planning to naturalise and I have a son born in 2010. Will he be drafted when we become citizens? He will be on the registry from age 18 and called for Musterung. He will not be drafted into active service in 2026. Whether that changes in later years depends on whether Bundestag activates Bedarfswehrpflicht.
I am a dual-national (Germany + home country) male born in 2009. Can I opt out by renouncing German citizenship? You can renounce, but that also ends your Blue Card-independent right to live and work in Germany. It is almost never a rational trade. Speak to a Rechtsanwalt für Wehrrecht first.
What if I already serve in my home country's military? Bilateral agreements exist with several countries to avoid double service. Consult the Bundeswehr directly — outcomes differ by citizenship pairing.
