Most German work visas have a chicken-and-egg problem: you need a job offer to get the visa, but employers want someone who can already start in Germany. The Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card), live since June 2024 under §20a AufenthG, breaks that loop. If you can score 6 points on a transparent checklist — or hold a fully recognised qualification — you can move to Germany for up to one year purely to job-hunt, work part-time while you search, and convert to a full work visa once you sign a contract. How the 6 points work

A 30-year-old Pakistani engineer with a partly-recognised Bachelor's (3), two years of experience (1), A2 German (2) and age under 35 (2) already sits at 8 points — comfortably over the line. The German and age buckets are where most applicants cheaply top up.
The shortcut: the "direct route"
If your qualification is fully recognised in Germany — your university degree is rated "H+" on anabin.kmk.org, or your vocational training has an Anerkennung, or you're in a regulated profession (nurse, doctor) with a licence — you skip the points test entirely. What the card lets you actually do
You can
- Live in Germany for up to 12 months purely to job-search
- Work part-time up to 20 hours/week to support yourself
- Take unlimited 2-week trial jobs (Probebeschäftigung) with employers
- Convert to a Blue Card or skilled-worker visa the moment you sign a qualifying contract
You cannot
- Take a permanent full-time job before converting — the card is for searching, not settling
- Bring family on the card itself — reunification comes after you convert to a work visa
- Extend it indefinitely — it's a one-shot year (a 2-year follow-up needs a real offer)
- Rely on it if your points are borderline — under-funding or weak proof gets refused

The realistic timeline
Score yourself + fix recognition (weeks 0–8)
Run your degree through anabin. If it isn't "H+", order a ZAB Zeugnisbewertung (≈ €200, ~8–12 weeks). This both feeds your points and unlocks the direct route.
Open a blocked account (weeks 2–4)
Park €1.091/month × 12 ≈ €13,092 with Fintiba or Expatrio, or arrange a sponsor's Verpflichtungserklärung. This is the most common rejection point — don't underfund it.
Book the embassy appointment (weeks 4–10)
Apply at the German mission for Pakistan/India/Bangladesh. Termin waits vary; book the instant your documents are ready. Bring passport, photos, proof of funds, language certificates and recognition paperwork.
Fly in + register (weeks 10–16)
After approval, enter Germany, do your Anmeldung within 14 days, get your Steuer-ID, and start applying. You can work 20 h/week from day one.
Sign + convert (within 12 months)
Once you have a qualifying contract, switch to a Blue Card or skilled-worker permit at the Ausländerbehörde before your card expires.
Pitfalls that get Pakistani applicants refused
Underfunding the proof. The €1,091 figure is per month of the requested permit — apply for 12 months and you need the full ~€13,092 visible, not one month's worth. A topped-up-just-in-time balance reads as a red flag.
Counting unrecognised degrees as full points. A Pakistani degree that is "H+/-" or unlisted on anabin scores partial points at best until you have a ZAB assessment. Check recognition before you tally your score, not after the embassy does it for you.
Treating the card as a settlement visa. It buys you a search year, nothing more. Your residence clock toward permanent residence and the 5-year naturalisation timeline only meaningfully advances after you convert to a work permit.
Is the Chancenkarte right for you?
Aim for it if you're a skilled worker — IT, engineering, healthcare, the trades — with a solid CV but no German offer yet, you can show ~€13,000 in funds, and you'd rather job-hunt face-to-face in Germany than email résumés from Lahore. If you already hold a qualifying offer above the Blue Card line, or you're heading to study or Ausbildung, a different route will be faster and cheaper.
