€1,000 a month from your employer — the Qualifizierungsgeld most newcomers haven't heard of
Germany's 2024 Weiterbildungsgesetz pays 60% of your salary (67% with children) while you reskill. Here's who qualifies in 2026 and how to make your employer apply.
€1,000 a month from your employer
Germany's Qualifizierungsgeld pays 60% of your net salary (67% with kids) while you reskill for a future-proof job at the same company. The catch? Your employer has to apply — and most never do.
of your net salary, paid by the Bundesagentur für Arbeit
60%
While you train. On top of your regular employer contract. For up to 3.5 years.
Who it's for in one sentence
You work at a German company. Your job is under structural-change threat (automation, climate transition, industry shift). Your employer agrees you can stay if you retrain. Qualifizierungsgeld pays most of your salary during the training.

Eligibility in plain English

- ≥10–20% of staffSame training need
- Works agreementOr tariff contract
- AZAV-certifiedTraining provider
- 120+ hoursVocational content
The 20% rule (simplified):
- Companies with ≥ 250 employees: 20% of the workforce must share the retraining need.
- Companies with < 250 employees: 10% of the workforce is enough.
- Must be documented in a Betriebsvereinbarung (works agreement) or collective agreement.
If you're the only person at your company who wants to retrain, this isn't your programme — see the education tax deductions instead.
How the money flows
Employer identifies structural-change need
1–4 weeksHR documents the 10–20% workforce-share requirement in a Betriebsvereinbarung.
Employer picks an AZAV-certified course
1–2 weeksTraining must go beyond on-the-job adaptation — real vocational skill uplift.
Employer files Antrag with Bundesagentur für Arbeit
3 months minimumAt least 3 months before training starts. Online portal for companies exists.
Employee signs training agreement
DaysYour regular contract stays active. Pension + health insurance continue as normal.
Training begins — Bundesagentur pays 60% / 67%
Monthly transfer to your employer, who passes it through on payroll. Your net take-home stays at least 60% of normal.
Optional: employer tops up
Many tariff-bound companies top up to 90–100% of normal net salary. Ask HR.

The 5 conversations you have to have with your employer
"Do we have a Betriebsvereinbarung for Qualifizierungsgeld?"
If yes → you're already eligible in principle. If no → ask HR if they'd consider drafting one.
"What is our structural-change argument?"
Auto → EV transition. Energy → renewables. Retail → e-commerce. Chemicals → green chemistry. IT → AI-augmented roles. Most sectors qualify somewhere.
"Which AZAV course matches my retraining target?"
Your employer picks — but push for something you actually want. Data Engineering, Cloud, Green Tech, Product Management courses are common.
"Will you top up to 100% of my normal salary?"
In tariff-bound companies (IG Metall, Verdi), often yes. Otherwise it's a negotiation.
"When do we file the Antrag?"
Must be ≥ 3 months before training starts. Get a written timeline from HR.
What can go wrong
What this gets you
- 60–67% of salary while you upskill on the clock
- Employer keeps paying your pension + health contributions
- Your job is legally protected during training
- New skill unlocks internal transfer or market-rate raise later
- Works for Blue Card + §19c skilled workers too — not only German citizens
What to watch for
- Requires a formal Betriebsvereinbarung (SMEs often don't have one)
- Employer must file — you can't apply yourself
- 3-month lead time before training can start
- If you leave the company soon after training, some tariff agreements require partial payback
- Training hours can eat into evenings / weekends if done part-time
Is it really €1,000?
The "€1,000/month" framing is a floor, not a ceiling. On a €3,500 gross salary (roughly Berlin mid-career), net is ~€2,200. Qualifizierungsgeld pays ~€1,320 / month standard (or ~€1,474 with kids) directly to your employer, who passes it on via payroll.
For a €5,500 gross Blue Card role: ~€3,300 net → ~€1,980 / month during training, still before any employer top-up.
This page is general information, not legal or tax advice. Amount eligibility depends on your exact contract, Steuerklasse, and employer's Betriebsvereinbarung. Always confirm your specific calculation with HR + the Bundesagentur für Arbeit Qualifizierungsgeld page.
What to do this week
- Ask your HR: "Do we have a Betriebsvereinbarung that includes Qualifizierungsgeld?"
- If no: forward the Bundesagentur FAQ to your Betriebsrat + HR. This costs the company basically nothing to set up.
- If yes: pick your target AZAV-accredited course from the KURSNET portal.
- Tell your boss you'd like to upskill into role X. Frame it as win-win: company gets a future-skilled employee at 40% cost, you get paid to learn.
- Aim to start 4 months out — 3-month lead + 1 month slack.
